Pilot Port in Türkiye — Plastic Smart Ports Activities

About Foça

This picturesque port is a centre for artisanal fisheries and an attractive tourist location with tour guides, hotels and gastronomy businesses in the wider İzmir region. With around 100 small-scale fishing vessels, fishing is an essential part of Foça’s culture and the cooperative is engaged in WWF’s initiative to transform small-scale fisheries and support the sustainable, ecologically oriented use of their marine and coastal environments.

Implementing Partner

WWF Türkiye — As implementing partner for the Turkish pilot sites, WWF Türkiye coordinates local stakeholder engagement, conducts workshops with fishers and tourism operators, and supports the development and testing of plastic reduction and waste management solutions in Foça and Mordoğan.

Activities in Foça — What We Are Doing

Tourism & Gastronomy

Reuse systems, compostable packaging, staff training and improved waste separation for recycling.

Fisheries

Trials on gear marking, bio degradable netting and reuse fishboxes, ghost gear retrieval and end-of-life gear recycling.

Communication

Workshops with business owners and staff working in gastronomy, tour operators and fishers, awareness materials, flyers for visitors and information campaigns for stakeholders.
